Microsoft x Matthew Dear

DELQA

Award-winning installation documentary produced for Microsoft and Listen.
Full production, edit, color, sound, and delivery by OTHR LABS.
Winner of 3 Cannes Lions — including Gold for Sound Design.

Overview

Microsoft and electronic artist Matthew Dear launched DELQA, a large-scale interactive installation at New York’s New Museum. Developed with creative agency Listen and powered by Microsoft’s Kinect technology, the project transformed audience movement into real-time shifts in sound and space.

The installation repositioned Kinect as a creative tool — not a gaming device — and became a benchmark for experiential brand storytelling.

Our Role

OTHR Labs (operating under a previous production banner at the time) was commissioned by Microsoft to produce the official documentary film for the campaign.

Over one week on site, we led full production and finishing — delivering a campaign-ready master for Microsoft’s global channels.

Production • Edit • Color • Sound • Master Delivery

Scope included:

  • Documentary production for Microsoft and Listen

  • Coverage of installation build, rehearsals, and opening night

  • Exclusive interviews with Matthew Dear and core collaborators

  • Full edit, color, sound design, and final delivery

  • Campaign film reaching 112K+ views on YouTube

The challenge was translating an immersive, spatial experience into a cohesive cinematic narrative — without losing its technical and emotional impact.

Recognition & Impact

DELQA earned three Cannes Lions:

  • Gold — Sound Design

  • Silver — Spatial Brand Installation

  • Silver — Experience & Digital Installations / Events

The project set a new standard for how brands could merge art, technology, and audience participation — reinforcing Microsoft’s leadership in interactive storytelling.
